Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a compression of the median nerve, which runs the length of the arm and through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Except for the little finger, the median nerve controls movement and sensation in all of the fingers. When it becomes compressed, it can cause discomfort or pain, which can worsen if not treated. A previous wrist fracture can cause narrowing of the carpal tunnel, as well as fluid retention, which can cause swelling of tissues and thus increased pressure in the carpal tunnel. Inflammatory (swelling) conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can cause swelling of the joint lining and tendons in the carpal tunnel. There may be no clear cause of carpal tunnel syndrome in some cases. There are, however, some known risk factors that raise your risk.
