Sciatica is characterized by pain that travels from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg. Nearly anyplace along the nerve route may cause you discomfort, but the low back, buttock, back of the thigh, and calf are the most common locations. Sciatica is the medical word for pain that radiates down each leg along the path of the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower back and passes through the hips and buttocks. Usually, sciatica only affects one side of the body. A herniated disc pressing on a section of the sciatic nerve, a bone spur on the spine, or a narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) are the three most common causes of sciatica. This causes swelling, pain, and usually some numbness in the afflicted limb. Even though sciatica pain can be excruciatingly painful, non-operative treatment usually relieves the condition in a few weeks. For those with severe sciatica who also have considerable limb weakness or bowel or bladder issues, surgery can be a possibility.
