The compression of the median nerve, which runs the length of the arm and through the carpal tunnel in the wrist, causes carpal tunnel syndrome. The median nerve controls movement and sensation in all of the fingers except the little finger. It can cause discomfort or pain when it becomes compressed, which can worsen if not treated. A previous wrist fracture can cause carpal tunnel narrowing as well as fluid retention, which can cause tissue swelling and thus increased pressure in the carpal tunnel. Inflammatory (swelling) conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can cause swelling of the carpal tunnel joint lining and tendons. In some cases, there may be no clear cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. However, there are some known risk factors that increase your risk.
